A  kiss  landed  a  schoolgirl  allergic  to  nuts  in  hospital  because  her  boyfriend  forgot  to  tell  her  he  had  eaten  hazelnuts  that  morning.  Laura  Kukic,  14,  a  resident  of  Barton-le-Clay  in  Bedfordshire,  is  allergic  to  nuts  and  went  into  shock  after  a  small  nut  fragment  got  into  her  system.  Her  face  began  to  swell  and  her  breathing  became  difficult,  Daily  Mail  reported.  She  was  given  first  aid  at  her  school  and  the  staff  immediately  called  an  ambulance.  Though  Laura  has  fully  recovered,  she  has  warned  other  youngsters  with  the  same  condition  that  a  kiss  can  be  dangerous.  “Who’d  have  guessed  that  a  peck  on  the  lips  could  be  so  dangerous,”  she  said.

The  incident  happened  in  June  after  tenth  standard  student  arrived  on  the  school  bus  with  at  the  Harlington  Upper  school  in  Bedfordshire.  Her  16-year-old  boyfriend  was  waiting  for  her  on  the  school  stairs.  “A  few  kids  were  about  getting  ready  for  the  day  and  as  usual  we  gave  each  other  a  kiss.  It  was  just  a  friendly  hello  kiss.  Nothing  out  of  the  ordinary,  nothing  passionate  just  a  brief  touch  of  the  lips,”  she  said.  Laura  was  first  diagnosed  with  a  severe  nut  allergy  when  she  was  three  years  old  and  has  to  carry  a  ‘Epipen’  with  her  wherever  she  goes.  This  is  used  to  deliver  a  shot  of  adrenaline  into  the  bloodstream,  which  reverses  the  allergic  reaction  by  narrowing  the  blood  vessels  and  opening  the  airways.

Her  allergy  means  that  any  contact  with  nuts  can  bring  on  a  severe  reaction.  Her  face  swells  up,  her  throat  tightens  and  it’s  hard  for  her  to  breathe  as  she  goes  into  what  is  called  anaphylactic  shock.  “I  hadn’t  noticed  anything,  but  my  boyfriend  could  see  that  my  face  was  starting  to  swell,  so  that  my  head  looked  visibly  bigger.  Then  he  said  ‘Oh,  I  did  have  cereal  with  hazelnuts  in,  but  that  was  about  and  hour  ago,  and  I’ve  brushed  my  teeth  and  had  a  drink,  surely  that  will  be  alright?  I  made  sure  I  brushed  my  teeth  a  few  times’,”  she  said.  Laura  had  also  taken  a  sip  from  his  can  of  coke,  which  could  have  been  contaminated  with  slight  traces  of  nuts.

Her  boyfriend  immediately  took  her  to  the  school  office.  A  few  minutes  later,  she  started  to  feel  the  effect.  Her  throat  tightened  and  she  was  having  trouble  breathing.  She  was  injected  with  her  epipen  by  a  school  first-aider,  to  bring  the  allergy  down.  The  Epipen  began  to  work  and  she  started  recovering.  Her  parents  arrived  and  took  her  to  hospital.  “The  paramedics  who  had  come  to  the  school  had  given  us  a  form  which  said  ‘Boyfriend  Kissed.’  It  felt  like  I  was  in  a  silly  over-dramatic  soap,”  said  Laura.

Young  Chinese  men  of  marriageable  age  will  soon  find  it  tougher  to  look  for  a  wife  because  there  will  be  24  million  more  young  men  than  women  of  marriage  age  by  2020.  The  Chinese  Academy  of  Social  Sciences  (  CASS),  a  government  think  tank,  has  said  in  a  report  that  the  gender  imbalance  in  the  country  is  widening,  the  People’s  Daily  reported.  The  gender  ratio  in  China  has  been  higher  than  the  world  average.  Census  data  in  2005  showed  that  the  sex  ratio  of  newborn  babies  was  120  boys  born  for  every  100  girls.  The  international  average  is  103  male  births  for  every  100  female  births,  Li  Bin,  director  of  the  National  Population  and  Family  Planning  Commission,  was  quoted  as  saying.

The  gender  imbalance  had  already  made  it  difficult  for  a  Chinese  bachelor  to  find  a  wife.  Some  single  young  men  in  big  cities  are  now  seeking  marriage  partners  in  rural  areas,  which  has  put  single  men  in  villages  at  even  more  of  a  disadvantage,  because  urban  bachelors  have  higher  incomes  and  more  stable  jobs,  the  report  said.  “I  have  neither  a  high  income  nor  a  spacious  apartment  in  Beijing;  so  none  of  my  female  colleagues  wanted  to  marry  me,”  Kong,  29,  from  Chaoyang  district  of  Beijing,  told  the  Global  Times.

Meanwhile,  Guan  Qingbin,  25,  a  migrant  worker  in  Fengtai  district  of  Beijing,  said  he  did  not  think  he  could  find  a  wife  in  Beijing.  “In  order  to  earn  more  money,  I  had  to  take  two  jobs,  one  during  the  day  as  a  car  repair  technician  and  the  other  one  at  night  as  a  driver  for  a  private  entrepreneur,”  Guang  said.  “Even  though  I  work  this  hard,  I  can  only  earn  3,000  yuan  ($443)  each  month,  which  is  inadequate  to  support  the  life  of  a  family  in  Beijing.”  “China’s  highly  imbalanced  sex  ratio  at  birth  has  lasted  for  more  than  20  years  and  the  cumulative  effects  have  already  emerged,”  said  Yuan  Xin,  a  professor  at  the  Institute  of  Population  and  Development  in  Nankai  University.  The  balanced  sex  ratio  is  the  law  of  natural  evolution,  but  the  imbalanced  sex  ratio  in  China  has  already  become  a  major  “obstinate  disease”  of  society,  he  said.

Seats in US theaters have gotten bigger during the last century to accommodate the expanding size of the members of the audience. A new report by Theatre Projects Consultants, a company that helps to design theaters, showed that from 1900 to 1990, the width of seats increased from 19 to 21 inches (48 to 53 centimeters). In the last 20 years seat size has expanded an inch. Leg room has increased and space between rows has also grown. “People have certainly gotten taller and wider over the years so many people find they are just not comfortable in the seats that would have worked 30 or more years ago,” said John Coyne, an author of the report and a US director of the company. Bigger seats have meant higher costs for theaters and their patrons because modern auditoriums can hold only half the number of people as a similar size auditorium built in early 1900, according to the report.

Since 1990, the size and cost of auditoriums have grown almost 30 percent. Theatre Projects Consultants, which has helped design more than 1,200 theaters in 70 countries, used data from the company’s US clients for the report and looked at both new facilities and renovations. Between 1960 and 2000 the average weight of an adult American has increased more than 24 pounds (11 kilos), or 15 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For audience comfort and to keep pace with cinemas and sports stadiums which offer other amenities as well as wide seats, theaters have had to adapt.

But Coyne said a balance is needed to provide comfort for audiences and to keep them engaged in the productions they are viewing. “Theater is about communication between the performer and the audience,” said Coyne, adding that it is important for actors to the close to the audience. But Broadway theaters in New York seem to be an exception, he added, because people will sacrifice some comfort for a hot ticket. Although larger seats are mainly a US trend, Coyne said the company is seeing similar issues in theaters and auditoriums overseas. “We think it is less about accommodating larger sizes and expectations but rather following trends in the US,” he explained.

Police  in  Simferopol,  Ukraine,  pumped  gas  into  the  flat  to  subdue  then  arrest  the  alleged  killer.  “We  can  only  confirm  that  a  26-year-old  man  was  arrested  on  suspicion  of  murder.  I  can  add  that  this  murder  was  committed  with  particular  cruelty.  We  cannot  disclose  further  details  in  the  interests  of  the  investigation,”  local  police  chief  Olga  Kondrashova  was  quoted  as  saying.
